Our environment is an integral factor in the quality of life we lead. Interiors are not just a space to live but also an experience we daily take part in that works as an extension of all that we are. From the style of furnishings to the colour scheme, the type of home we choose is a constant reminder of our personality, values, and interests. Thus the way we choose to arrange form and space around us communicates meaning to our lives and creates physical and emotional responses within us that directly affect our well being.

To create a living space which nurtures all that is best about the human spirit it is important a home is in harmony with the world around it. The concern with superficial appearances has seen the house become a statement of status with little regard for whether the home is in empathy with its surrounding environment or if the rooms within it work as a unified whole. This leads to occupants feeling alienated from nature, each other, and their true spirits.

Designer’s Atelier believe that home should rather be a sanctuary that is never separated from the natural world and that rooms should relate to those around them and never be designed in isolation. Like our own body, the house is a three dimensional structure with each part as essential as any other. By balancing the external, we can help balance the internal. A harmonious living space can create an energy field which can nourish us and create healthy relationships and experiences in our lives.

The natural world holds all the answers of design with its intricate system of balance. While we cannot completely recreate nature’s matchless harmonies, we can be inspired by them and apply the order of nature to interiors. One of the crucial elements of the natural world is polarity. There is light and dark, hot and cold, and masculine and feminine; you cannot have one without the other. We honour this principal by respecting contrast when choosing colours and textures, never using any element without a balancing counterpart.
