Nautilus on the Sliding Machine

This delightful and intriguing curiosity allows you to display and enjoy the delicate structure of the Nautilus shell. An inhabitant of the Indo-Pacific Ocean, this deep water dwelling creature is often referred to as a “living fossil”, on account of its ancient forefather and fossil collectors’ favourite: the Ammonite.

The Nautilus (or “Sailor”, from the Greek) fills and empties the chambers of its shell to adjust its buoyancy as it moves across the slopes of coral reefs that it calls home.

By winding the mechanism of this robust brass and wood device the user is able to slide the hemishells to and fro; allowing viewers to delight in the fascinating cephalopod’s logarithmic spiral as it separate’s and becomes whole once again. It is a naturally attractive object displayed beautifully.

This item is specially selected by award-winning designer Dagmar Holubova and features in Designer’s Atelier’s “Cabinet of Curiosities”.
