This helically spiralled fossilized shell is the remnant of an extinct mollusc closely related to modern-day cephalopods such as the octopus and cuttlefish. Its name derives from Pliny the Elder’s description “Ammonis Cornua” which translates as “Horns of Ammon” (Ammon being an Egyptian god often depicted with goat horns).

Designer’s Atelier’s have sourced this beautiful piece, along with an attractive black metal stand to show off the ammonite’s intricate natural features.

This particular fossil comes from an ammonite that lived during the Jurassic period. That makes this stunning article between 180 and 194 million years old. It was discovered in Erfoud, which is a fossil-rich area at the border between Algeria and Morocco. This is a fascinating and attractive piece of prehistory that will look delightful displayed in your home.
