Horseshoe Crab

The horseshoe crab is often described as a living fossil on account of its resemblance to its ancient cousin the Trilobite. Featured in the Designer’s Atelier Collection of International Treasures this is an amazing piece of natural design at its best.

On one side we have the hard shell, smooth, protective, and hydrodynamic. On the underside we can see clearly the crab’s vulnerability – it is more like a spider than a crab when viewed from beneath.

Fascinatingly the horseshoe crab has remarkable blood which does not contain haemoglobin, a quality that means that it is harvested to be used in testing for bacterial endotoxins. This lack of haemoglobin also means that it has blue blood; which makes it a member of the ocean’s natural nobility.
